Richard Jan Carman - K5MA
May 22, 1942 - November 13, 2018 

Ham radio operator Richard Jan Carman, 76, of West Falmouth died November 13, 2018 at Bridges by Epoch memory care facility in Mashpee, MA. 

He was the husband of Sarah J. Carman. 

The only son of Lloyd P. Carman and Colleen (Ball) Carman, he was born in Philadelphia and grew up spending summers on his parents' Friendship sloop on the nearby Sassafras River. 

Known as Jan, Mr. Carman obtained his first amateur radio operator's license at age 14 and maintained the hobby until Alzheimer's disease interfered. He was a DXer and contester. 

He graduated from high school in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, and went on to earn both a bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. While at the university, he played trumpet and was a member of the marching band. 

Upon graduation, Mr. Carman accepted a position with the Martin Marietta Corporation in Baltimore, designing and testing marine equipment for government and commercial endeavors. 

The unit was purchased in the mid-1960's by Cameron Iron Works, an oil field equipment manufacturer, and Mr. Carman moved to Houston, Texas. He traveled the world - from Brazil to Bali, including a visit to Tehran in the late 1970's - representing the company. In 1983, he joined Ferranti ORE, which used to be in Falmouth, MA. 

Four years ago, he adopted a rescued dachshund, Molly. 

In addition to his second wife, he leaves his son, Christopher J. Carman of Glasgow, Scotland; two daughters and their husbands, Kendal L. and John Hinchey and Rebecca L. and Zachary Kraft, all of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; a grandson, Mason P. Carman; and four granddaughters, Riley Kraft, Emma Hinchey, Ella Hinchey, and McKenna Kraft.
